What is a Light Alarm Clock?

We are very accustomed to wake up noise, yet this isn’t really the best way to wake up.  Every night our bodies goes through cycles of deep and light sleep, called the REM Cycle (Rapid Eye Movement).  One external factor that has a profound effect on this sleep cycle is sunlight!  A light alarm clock is able to mimic the sunrise causing you to wake up more naturally and peacefully.

Here’s how it works.  Typically 30 minutes before your set wake up time, the light alarm clock will turn on very dimly.  The brightness of the clock will then gradually increase as time moves closer to your set wake up time.  This method is far better than waking to to noise since light will trigger the end of a REM cycle and allow you to wake up during the lightest part of your sleep cycle.  Alarm clocks that use noise may wake you during the deepest part of REM sleep, which is one reason you may feel terrible when you wake up.

Is A Light Alarm Clock Worth the Hype?

In one word – yes!  For the past 15 years of my life I have woken up at early morning hours, typically ranging between 4:30 AM and 5:30 AM.  During High School and College I had to wake up for morning practice at 6:00 AM, and more currently I need to accommodate a long commute time to get to work. I upgraded to the Philips Somneo Light Alarm Clock because of the increased features of this clock.  First, the Somneo allows you to have two wake up timers instead of 1 which means I am able to accommodate my wife’s sleep schedule also.  Next, the increase range of colors is impressive and effective!  At first I did not think this mattered as much, but it amazingly does!  When comparing the Somneo to my old clock, I wake up feeling more refreshed! The white noise function, which isn’t found on any other model,  is also greatly used when it is difficulty to fall asleep and reading books don’t help.   Lastly, the integrated USB port is an added perk that  easily allows me to charge my phone.  Cable management is key!
